To say Raymond Feist's novels in the Midkemia setting are spanning is an understatement. Through time and location it is all there and is arguably the among the best and most consistant series in the fantasy genre. While the Serpent War had a familiar plot it wound up with a somewhat weak ending. However there were a lot of gaps and Feist went back and started filling in the holes that were left unfilled for so long. Krondor The Assassins takes off where the very good Krondor the Betrayal left off.
The plot thus far appears a bit unclear. But speaking of it here will only play spoiler for this new series. The risk is the plot is going to make no sense, but Feist has proven to be masterful at tying up loose ends. It is not worrysome now, but if a few more hints atthe main plot are not given, it could be a bit too much of a surprise. Krondor The Assassins focuses on William and James. This was a pleasant surprise in regards to William being a featured character. He has almost always been Pug's son and not a full character in any sense of the word. James being a central character should come at no surprise, the thief turned squire has always been one of Feist's most interesting and compelling characters. One of the best parts of the Riftwar Legacy series is that the reader gets to see how Jame sprogresses from thief to squire to Duke of Krondor. Assassins moves at a brisk pace and proved to be a quick read. To be honest it was too short. There could have been a hundred more pages to fill in some gaps and it would not have been slowed down all. The formatting and font size also padded the novel a bit. While it may have been shorter than I would have liked, Krondor The Assassins is a solid effort and keeps an old saga alive and kicking.
Style: 4 (Classy and well done)
