2nd EditionI have had the pleasure of purchasing a few of the games from Crunchy Frog Enterprises and this game, Kill The Commie Bastards , was the funniest read since I bought Tales From The Floating Vagabond. The pages of the book are not numbered, but a quick hand count is about 18 pages counting the cover. Section 1 covers the introduction to the game and role-playing. It is in this section where the game tells the reader that the game is NOT a role-playing game, but a video game on paper. This comment is very justified. Section 2 covers character generation. A simple 1 to 100 system is used and is skewed (purposely) to allow players with high stats. Mind, Body, Dexterity and Accuracy are the attributes. The game claims the Mind stat doesn't come in to much use, but is used to help determine Hit Point strangely enough. There are three kinds of characters in KTCB; Blasters (guns!), Flamers (BBQ anyone?) and Kung-Fu Fighters (fury of flying fists!). Each gets a combat-related bonus to their specialty. Skills have only 3 levels, and each skewed high, again. This IS a video game, after all. There are only 7 skills listed in the book. That is all that is needed. Experienced is gained by killing the enemy. Not just killing them, but in as few shots as possible. 1 shot kills are worth 25 points down to 5 points for a 3 shot kill. Section 3 covers combat. Commies only get 1 action per turn, the heroes get 2. The most amusing part is the reload times. Commies take 2 turns to reload while the heroes never run out of ammo. This is the Hollywood Effect. Section 4 presents a few adventure scenarios. Section 5 presents a campaign adventure involving Teheran, Iran. It is this adventure that adds a new rule to the game. If you are presented with a crowd of commies and there are American hostages, then when you fire into the crowd, NO American can be hit. So, you can unload your flame thrower on the masses with no fear of hurting the hostages. Section 6 is the designer's notes. This is a beer 'n nuts game, something to pass a boring afternoon or
just something different to do one evening.
The Bonus! But wait, there's more! KTCB comes with the one and only supplement for the game, Kill The Commie Mutant Alien Bastards IN 3-D (KTCMAB).This supplement adds some personality traits to the character covering things like Nationality and Accent and Hair Part. It also adds some stats for commie mutant aliens (are there any other kind?) and three more adventure settings. At eight pages, it was worth the price (free).
Review SummaryI like this game. It's utter nonsense and funny at the same time. Well worth the price to add to your bookshelf. If anything, it will line the bottom of any bird game very well.Because it is a small press game, the whole game is B&W. The artwork is very cartoonish as befits the game. Crunchy Frog Enterprises can be found at http://www.teamfrog.com and has it's own fan-supported mailing list for the discussion of all it's games which can be subscribed to at teamfrog-subscribe@onelist.com. CFE provides many quality games as well as their more humurous games.
