What do you do for an encore after producing a high quality RPG like Star Trek the Next Generation? Well you produce a game that is even better. Back when the klingons were evil, and the boys in red died in droves, and of course every alien babe wanted a Starship captain to teach them what is a kiss, You Create Star Trek the Role playing game based on Gene Roddenbury's classic series!

Just like the Next Generation RPG Classic Trek uses Last unicorn's Icon system which is a strange system indeed To perform a task player rolls his stat (plus or minus appropriate substats called Edges) in six sided dice, he then adds the apropriate skill to the highest die roll. Secondly just like Star Wars you have a "wild" or Dram die, a roll of a one means something unexpectidly bad happens, but if you roll a 6 on the drama die you keep the two highest dice rolled! the system is simple once you get the hang of it.

Character creation is probably one of the only true snafus to the Icon system, it starts out simply enough with a template (for race) and an overlay (for occupatuion) giving you your core stats and skills, then building a background based on past history givin gyou points to spend on advantages and disadvantages, the system is just a lot of paperwork, and crossreferencing, for a system as free flowing as the rest of it is, but to be honest a lot of this is due to the military background of Trek and you can almost excuse it (but I don't see players scrambling to make new characters weekly that's for sure!!)

Now gaming specs aside, the genre is just what you would expect,an awesome layout showing off the best of the 1960's TV classic and well written (You can tell the boys at Last Unicorn are fans just because of the attention to detail found in this book!) Full color, and Hard cover, It's almost worth the $35 just to read!!

Maybe I'm just too much of a Trek Geek to be Objective, but I have to say I'm impressed with almost everything. But there is something to be said for the kick ass take names, and use the prime directive as toilet paper kind of world.

Style: 5 (Excellent!)
Substance: 4 (Meaty)
