Tales of Chivalry and Romance
by Shannon Appel, William G. Filios, Geoff Gillan, Heidi Kaye, and Eric Rowe 64 pages, perfect bound $13.95 ISBN: 1-928999-02-6 Grade: B- Reviewed by Lisa Padol As the title indicates, the adventures covered deal with either chivalry or romance. Each topic gets two complete adventures and a few adventure seeds. In addition, chivalry gets what could be called a campaign seed. My favorite adventures are "The Adventure of the New Made Knight," for chivalry, and "The Adventure at Ceren Abbas," for romance. The former presents knights with several straightforward challenges to the code of chivalry. The latter combines mystery with wonder. Both require a fair degree of preparation on the part of the GM. The other two long adventures are good, although I'm confused about the timing of the tourney in "The Adventure of the Mysterious Manor." This is ironic as the author keeps careful track of the amount of time passing as the PCs question the inhabitants of the manor in an attempt to prove one of their number innocent of murder before the deadline imposed on them by the lord of the manor. The campaign and adventure seeds are well done, and mention is made of previously published Pendragon supplements with adventures concerning both chivalry and romance. The book is rounded out with two pages describing the rules of chivalry and love. The rules of love are contradictory; I presume this is either intentional, taken from the source material (Capellanus' "The Art of Courtly Love") or both. However, there is some missing text about Camelot's Courts of Love, which is especially irritating because this is a short supplement. The layout and art are good, and I am delighted to see the blazoned shields of most of the knights who appear in the adventures. Fourteen dollars for 64 pages seemed high, but a bit of comparison shopping revealed that the price is precisely in line with RPG products of similar length. All in all, Tales of Chivalry and Romance is a worthy addition to the world of Pendragon. It delivers what the title promises.
Style: 4 (Classy and well done)
