Do you like stuff? Of course you do, and the neater the stuff the better. This is why I enjoyed playing with "Gundark's Fantastic Technology" book for the Star Wars Role Playing Game. It is packed with all of the toys and goodies you need to liberate your galaxy from the Empire, purge those pesky Rebels, or just to make a quick buck on some seedy planet somewhere. If you have ever thought, "Hey, this would really be neat to have in Star Wars", there is a chance it will be in this book.
Weighting in at just 110 pages, "Gundark's" is packed. There is an average of three nify things per page, a few illustrations and just a bit of empty space. Your selections are arranged in sections, the largest being for armor, and the second largest being a tie between melee weapons and energy weapons. Fear not thought, for every item of pointy hurt, or flaming chunk of boom, there is something that a good imagination could use just as effectively. For example, what do you use on those four hundred Verpine who are chittering your name and want nothing more than to see if you can breath vacuum. Guns, knives, grenades? How about bug spray? You'll find it on page 79. One thing I didn't like about the book is the amount of time my players wanted to spend drooling on the various tools, toys, and trinkets. Granted it all proved useful, and it all got used in some way in the game. Whether is was for its intended purposes is another story. For that reason I do warn GM's about the unbalancing potential of the equipment in this book. There are things like anti-walker missiles, and ship jacking kits for starters. One other thing about this book bothered me. There are fifty-eight pages of weapons and armor, another six pages of things that could be made in to the former or the latter, and various things that are pretty scary in the hands of players. In my opinion, the book could have done well with more items like the med-kit or the organic gill. On the whole I was impressed. West End Games books are always well laid out, with easy to read pages and nice illustrations. The ideas are unique and save the hassle of making up stats for things on the spot. The fact that they included the musical instruments for the cantina band also helped their rating.
Style: 4 (Classy and well done)
