I've always loved Cardboard Heroes, even though I never convinced my players to go with the full-detail combat rules that required miniatures. I was most dismayed to watch the CH line fade out before I could get into collecting them all.
So, delighted I was when Steve Jackson Games reassembled the pieces from all the original fantasy-themed CH sets into a single product last year. That boxed set sold for $30 and briskly. Happily for those of us with lighter wallets, it was reprinted as a spiral-bound book and a $19.95 price. Well worth the wait. CH figures are indispensable for those of us who have no patience or coordination for metal figures. You'll still need a modicum of patience and the ability to cut and fold in straight lines, but that still beats trying to paint pupils on a dwarf blacksmith. The instructions are clear and easy. The art is lovely and diverse. You may not find an exact match for your character, but you'll probably come close enough to be happy. Plenty of loot counters to decorate your maps (and traps) with, too. Now, the next think I'd like to see them do is reprint the Traveller series of Cardboard Heroes. To be sure, there weren't as many of these . . . but given that GURPS Traveller is the only Traveller game in town these days, I'd think the market for these would be assured.
Style: 5 (Excellent!)
