Pogs for gamers?!?!? you must be mad certainly after that whole Magic the gathering fiasco no self respecting gamer would ever be caught dead trying to cash in on such a fad lest he be called a sell out! Well Diskwars may look like pogs for the D&D set but it's more much more. Once i got my first two army packs out of the boxes I realised this was going to be a unique game. The game consists of 7 sheets of "disks" or unit counters a sheet of play counters (like wounds or arrows etc..) and of couse a simple poster sized rulesheet. as for the rules they are actually kind of sparse and could yuse a bit of polishing but after a few test games this doesn't seem like such a problem.

The easiest way to view disk wars is in terms of a miniture game, however unlike most minis games you will not want to trade in the counters for thier 3D metal equivilants. Each disk has the unit name and pictue (no surprise) his point cost movement stats and special abilities. movement in the game is performed by fliping the unit (or disk over) an amount of times equal to his movement or less therefore Giant (whose disks are larger than say the dsik for a knight) may move les flips but due to it's massive size can cover more terrain. archery also is a matter of player skill (dropping arrow counters from a foot above the target) making for chances and possabilities just unseen before in most dice systems, In diskwars for example if an arrow hits a disk enemy or ally it hits that target making friendly fire a much greater concern. combat it self uses a system not unlike Magis with attack defense and toughness numbers making combat totally dice free. the only thing you need to add to this game is a 12" ruler for archer and spell ranges (and if you don't have one there's one photocopied on the rules you can cut out.

While this game lacks the depth of games like Warhammer 40,000 or Clan war it's a great (and much cheaper) way to enjoy miniture wargaming. no painting, no dice and simple rules anyone can understand. Probably thier biggest worry is if this game takes off is how not to turn it into the overly complex and lumbersome beast that such previously simple games like car wars and Starfleet battles have become!

I would highly recomend Diskwars for the player who likes miniture game strategy but lacks minture game patience, modeling skills and pocketbook. also a great intro to those who have never played minis games before.
