A Review of GURPS Warriors
Last night I picked up a copy of GURPS Warriors, and it's well worth the twenty bucks I shelled out for it. Now, I wasn't all that impressed by GURPS Wizards, so I was unsure how I would like Warriors. I like the template system featured in GURPS Wizards. It's a great resource to aid character creation in the ever-growing complexity of the GURPS system. Yet, GURPS Wizards is only good for campaigns with magic. So, in the words of Austin Powers: "it's not my bag baby!" Now, Warriors is another matter. Warriors is a supplement for everyone. In GURPS, most characters are some form of warrior. Whether it is a soldier, swordsman, or ace pilot, they all can be classified as a warrior. GURPS Warriors covers all these character types and more. This supplement can be used for any GURPS setting. And, it is can be used by GMs and PCs alike. GURPS Warriors provides 29 warrior templates. In the beginning of the book, there are a few pages of useful notes and advise about using the warrior templates. Then the book is jam-packed with the templates. Each template is accompanied by four sample characters (of different point levels) as examples. Each template has a base cost which covers the attributes, advantages, disadvantages, and skills. Along with this, "customization notes" are included to help modify the template. The template point costs vary depending on the type of warrior, but most of them don't require a full 100 point. This allows the PCs to have some free point to create the character they want. Hence the creation part of character creation is preserved. I don't have many gripes about this product. I would have liked more details about integrating the warrior templates into a campaign, and, perhaps, information about running warrior-based campaigns. Basically, more advice for GMs on the aspects of using this supplement in campaigns would have been nice. Other than that, I have no more complaints. Overall an amazingly useful GURPS supplement. I strongly recommend this book to all GURPS GMs and players. I'd rate this as one of the most useful GURPS books ever. If you only get three GURPS books, get the Basic Book, Compendium I, and GURPS Warriors. In that order.
Style: 5 (Excellent!)
