Well, I'm gonna say it. I like 2010 more than 2001. Movie AND module. Why? Chalk it up to a fin de siecle addiction to pace & timing. A youthful addiction to Star Wars, or cinematic tastes marred by 500 viewings of Die Hard when I was in school.

I guess 2010 is just a much better adaptation to the rpg format than its predecessor. Now, not being familiar with the Star Frontiers rules (for much the same reason I don't remember LA Law plots, aside from the Venus Butterfly, what's her face's character falling down an elevator shaft, Benny's mom dying, Homer Simpson... Ah, hell. I guess I do remember LA Law plots. Never mind. For the same reason I don't remember A-Team plots. It was a long time ago, and they kind of sucked), I can't judge how well they manage to duplicate the film's harrowing Aerobraking sequence in the Knight Hawks rules. I'll just assume they did.

The role-playing section is much better than before, however. The plot of 2010 was such that a viewer, when asked 15 years later, will be unable to recall it. This is a not bad thing, as it was a half-decent SF film.

The problem is, of course, that the PCs are pregens. On the plus side, you can play John Lithgow! I guess that's a good thing. The plot progresses pretty much exactly as I remember the movie ("Something's going to happen; something.. Wonderful". Yep, great dialogue that), and whether or not that's a good idea will be left up to the ages.

My problem with 2010 and its predecessor is that they're very good adaptations of the films. Unfortunately, suppressing the metagaming urge when you're basically presented with a plot that you know is tough. It could be fun running through it with people who've seen the movie, I guess. They have changed a few things, at least from the book; landing on Europa does NOT mean a giant tree eats you. Which is good.
