This boxed set contains starship rules and campaign background for the Star Frontiers Scifi RPG. I picked up my copy for $5 at a convention auction and found my money's worth inside, including 3 booklets, diecut counters and maps.
The first book is a thin, 16 page, set of tactical starship combat rules. Titled the UPF (United Planetary Federation, sound familiar? It got a little worse) Tactical Operations Manual. The rules are simple and playable, both in their basic and advanced forms. These rules are much easier to grasp and go with than those provided in the XXVc game for example. Alone or as part of a scifi campaign, these rules (space map and counters) will provide some enjoyable gaming.
The Campaign book, 64 pages, contains all of the skills, equipment and rule additions needed to take your Star Frontiers games into the starship environment. The last 20 pages is mostly campaign material, history and current events. There is some imagination here but to the non-Star Frontiers gamer, it is of limited use. Few of the pieces of equipment, nor the technology and skills are very original. For its purpose though, it is a wealth of knowledge.
The last booklet contains 3 linked adventures, The Warriors of White Light. This is good stuff and easily transfered to other Scifi RPG systems. The characters join a militia (for any of various reasons) train, patrol, investigate and fight. Maps include a space station, scout class starship and 2 frieghters (with very-Star Trek engine pods and even NCC-# designations). Through the adventures herein, a mystery will be solved, pirates will be brought to justice, traitors will be uncovered and a skirmish fought.
Nothing fancy nor innovative, just solid stuff. If you're not going to use it with Star Frontiers, make sure you don't pay very much more than the price of your favorite RPG rag.
