Risk
Surely Risk needs no introduction ? Well, it's getting one, purely from the point of view of consistency. Risk is a game of warfare on a global scale. Up to six players can play and each player's armies are indicated with coloured plastic counters of varying quality depending on which edition of the game you buy. The one piece fold out board shows a traditional stylised map of the world, with the Americas on the left and Japan on the right. The map is divided up into continents and then further divided into countries or territories. There are two variants of the game, either total world domination or missions. World domination can take a very long time. Missions take the form of capturing a couple of named continents, a specific number of territories, or completely wiping a certain other player out. There is a card for each country and these cards are dealt out to each player to indicate which countries that player has posession of at the start of the game. Each player places one of his armies on each country they own. Players then take it in turns to deploy the remainder of their armies on any of their territories. Each player starts their turn by counting the number of territories he or she controls. They receive one army for every three territories with a minimum of three. There are also bonus armies for completely controlling continents. Once these armies have been placed, the player may carry out as many attacks as he likes. Each of these attacks are resolved through the use of six sided dice. The defender has a slight advantage in terms of automatically winning a draw, but the attacker has potentially more dice to play with. The attack continues until either side runs out of armies or the attacker gives up. If the defender is wiped out, the attacker moves in and takes control of the territory. As long as the attacker successfully conquers one territory during his go, he receives a card. These cards may be saved up and traded in as sets for additional armies. As soon as a player completes their mission, or in the case of world domination, wipes out everyone else, they are declared the winner. http://www.hasbro.com/risk/original/ http://www.ascu.unian.it/~bepi/risiko/risors_e.html Evaluation Risk is an absolute classic. It's simple to play and a cinch to teach. The real problem for this game is that it really boils down to too much luck which I guess is why I don't win very much.... Good fun every once in a while when you're not feeling too cerebral...
Style: 4 (Classy and well done)
