As I point out all the time, very few Tribe Books (and clan books, and tradition books, and the sort) published by White Wolf deserve the money you pay. Unfortunately the Get of Fenris Tribe book is one of those that do not deserve it. A lot of wonderful things that could have been in this book have been spoiled by an author that seems to have mixed things up too much.
First of all, let's get something straight. The Garou, especially the Get and Wendigo, are very traditionalist folk. They do not give up on their customs and life styles easily. But when you read this book, you get the notion that the Get were once Norse folk that have now become complete American nationalists. Pretty stupid in fact. The opening comic knocked me off my chair laughing when I read the all so glorious American commander Get screaming "I may be Get you Nazi pig.. But I am all AMERICAN!". I mean, what is this supposed to mean? The get are Viking descendants, Norse folk that still believe in the spirits of Odin the Father of Gods, Thor the Thunderer, Fenris of whom they are the Get of. Yet, the way their history is presented you'd think they are noble Norse converts that are fighting for the American Dream. That isn't all though. Yes, the author does have at least some sense of Norse mythology and history, but it is very loose from what I have seen of it. He seems to have dug up Norse names for creatures (such as Jotun and Valkyrie), and has put them here and there. That is about all though. The only thing that he adds up to that artificial feeling of 'being a Viking descendant' is praises about how glorious and strong the Get are here and there. Still, he seems to have a grasp about the Get tribal life, and kinfolk relationships, political views and social structure. That was about the only good part of the book I could find. The new Fetishes and Rites are good too, if not overly creative. The tribal weakness is good. Another clever thing is that he has remembered to add the Norse rune alphabet to the book. The new totems are ok, if not very good. The art, on most part, is very ugly, as I have come to expect from SCAR Studios over time. Ron Spencer's art, on the other hand, is brilliant, as he displays all his talent (and gore *grin*) once again. What is the final word on this book? It certainly is don't buy it unless you share the author's point of view about the Get of Fenris. You'll be displeased. Find it in a hobby shop, read through it for 10 minutes or so. Put it back down. Even if you buy it you very probably won't read it much longer than that, trust me.
