Harnworld, 2nd ed.

Well, First off, I bought this set--which is composed of two books and a fold-out map--because I was looking for something different. I'd been playing A World of Darkness games for a while, and wanted to get into a fantasy setting without having to face the monstrous Aglanced truncheons and flagons games... I wanted a setting that would be easy to adapt to nearly any system I could think of...

I think I found it...

Harnworld is split up into two booklets--Harndex, which is an A-Z index of lands, guilds, gods, geographic locations, etc found in the world of Harn, and Harnworld, which outlines some of the central cultures, religions, languages and more for three continents on the world of Kytheria

In general, the world is extremely well thought out. I've had it from a friend who writes for Columbia Games that the setting was developed first, and the system was created afterwards, so there's no doubt that the setting in this game shines.

I'm using Harnworld as a model from which to build my own fantasy world... the political factions, the cultural and economic groups are well thought-out, if a little sparse in this package. But then, this package is intended to serve as a means of whetting your apetite for more.

The graphics are of acceptable quality, and taken from a variety of sources. I especially liked the city-maps and the color maps for vegetation growth, language dominance and land-types. These maps are presented in a modern-day (read as interrupted epizenithal projection) formats. There are even maps for economics, prevailing winds, ocean currents and tectonic plates... the amount of detail in this package has pleased me to almost no ends.

Overall, this package has given me an extremely good feelingfor the setting--two continents on Kytheria... since the subject matter is strictly limited to a surface overview of the regions, there is nogame-specific system involved in the presentation. This means the setting is ultimately easily adapted to almost any system you might play under.

It's interedted me enough that I'm going to get the Harn Players book, to learn a little about the game system... And I'm probably going ot buy more from Columbia Games... (and it's not just 'cause I'm Canadian...)

Style: 3 (Average)
Substance: 5 (Excellent!)
