I just got this yesterday, so this is just a first impression.
WHOAH!This is the third Tribe 8 product I've bought, and I've yet to be disappointed by any of them. (I got the rulebook on a Friday. Bad thing. I nearly flunked a Physics test Tuesday.)I spent three solid hours reading this last night, and I was amazed at every page. The book is decorated in the line art/charcoal style that has characterized every other Tribe 8 product so far, and it fits the game to perfectly. The main part of the book, describing Vimary and the areas around it, is written from the perspective of various people who live in Vimary, being forced to speak by a Z'bri. (The demon figures of Tribe 8.) The locations are vividly described, from Bazaar and the Council chambers, to the lands of the Z'bri and the tunnels under Vimary. With the combination of the text and the artwork, this helps feel as if you are actually in the places described in the book. I'd recommend getting this book, if only to lend it to players so they can more vividly envision Vimary. And the maps! They're drawn in the same style as the rest of the artwork in the book, and perfectly, as the maps are supposed to be hand-drawn. I love maps, and these are wonderful. The next big section of the book details more of the people of Vimary. All manner of beings are described, from some of the potential allies to deadly adversaries. Members of the Tribes, the Fallen, Keepers, and Z'bri are all described. Again the style helps bring the people to life. The last section is for GMS only, and describes some of the politics of Vimary. Factions in Vimary are described, and their motivations and plans. The role of some of the NPCs in the Tribe 8 storyline are described, to make it easier to stick to the storyline if you want. In short, while Tribe 8 *can* be played without this book, after you read it, you won't want to.
Style: 5 (Excellent!)
