In 1876, the most scientifically advanced city in the world is Salt Lake City. One word describes why - Hellstromme. The world-renowned leader in mad science makes his home there, and the Smith & Robards labs are just outside of town. You can usually find it here first.

Like most PEG sourcebooks, the main book for this boxed set is broken up into three sections.

The first section is the posse section. It starts with the Tombstone Epitaph's guide to Salt Lake City, published so that it looks like an old West newspaper. My gripes on that have been published in a number of other places on this web site, so I'll hold off on that. However, it doesn't hold any punches on the Mormons, and it shows both their good and their bad. It also goes into detail about a number of other environs of Salt Lake City, including the Steel Sky, where people on the ground can never even see the sky, and the Sludge - where the water ain't water anymore. The posse section ends with a description of the bloodsport "Skullchucker" (much like Blood Bowl, it seems) and some archetypes.

The Marshal's section includes what's really going on in Salt Lake City, from Dr. Hellstromme's conversion to Mormonism to the abominations hiding around town. The worst part about this book is the occasional awful pun. The book is a great guide to SLC.

There are two 32 page booklets included in the package. The first is one on Thaumaturgical Diffusion, or the cross between hucksterism and mad science. It provides an interesting twist to both of them, though it should be kept rare. It's definitely something that would catch most people in the Weird West outside of SLC offguard.

The second booklet features mechanical augmentation. Dr. Gash provides mechanical augmentation to those who can afford it - but good luck on finding it, and hope you can pay for it and keep it. It's also not pretty, and anywhere else other then SLC it has a good chance of getting you lynched - and even sometimes in SLC. Nobody's going to be loppoing off their limbs Cyberpunk-style and getting brand new steamtech hands.

The final parts of the boxed set include a two part cardboard cutout of a landship and a Mojave rattler, a number of cutouts for Skullchucker players, and a double-sided poster of SLC and a Skullchucker map on the back.

Of the boxed sets that have been released for varous geographical locations in Deadlands, this one is by far the best buy so far. I'd definitely recommend it for anyone interested in SLC.
