When I was at Origins '98 and first getting into Deadlands, I heard a younger gamer talking to a staffer at the PEG booth about the book Fire & Brimstone. "Oh, but who'd want to play a preacher?" he asked. The staffer responded, "Look at this guy! He kicks ass for the Lord!"
Well, that's probably not an exact quote, but you get the gist of what was meant. The forces of Good in Deadlands are much more mysterious then those of Evil, but F&B gives them the ammunition they need to take the battle to Evil and make them pay. You're not going to be making a kickass combat monster Blessed (at least, not very easily) but he'll definitely not be a pushover. The first section is the Posse territory. It covers most aspects of Blessed - from the different religions, including Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Taoism, and others - to miracles and gifts. It also covers sinnin' - if you're a man of the cloth, you can't lie, cheat, and steal, and expect to get away with it. It ends with a section of the evils that the Blessed have to deal with - from ordinary folks, to the misled, to the unrepentant. In No Man's Land you find some more of the advantages of being a Blessed, including Divine Intervention and new relics. The Divine Intervention rules guarantee that they will not be overused in your campaign, and if used, will be at a proper climax to the adventure. The Marshal's section mostly deals with the wages of sin. Even if the Blessed makes his Faith roll when he sins, he still gets punished. It also provides some additional rules for black magic, just to keep the baddies on their toes, and ends with one of the Deadlands mailing list's favorite adventures, "The Mission".
I marshall my group for Deadlands, and this book made me jones to run a Blessed character for a game. I still have yet to actually play in a Deadlands game, but my Blessed character is all up and ready to run; now just to find a game!
Style: 5 (Excellent!)
