TSR tried a modern day magical world with some forgettable Amazing Engine game…it stunk! FASA has Shadowrun, and I don't care for it. It seems that no one has ever come up with a convincing back story as to why the modern world…WHAM! suddenly has magic. David Pulver figured it out…the atomic bomb test at Trinity changed everything! This book changes everything as well, and does an excellent job of showing off the strength and flexibility of the GURPS system.

There's magic in this world…lots of it in weird and wild ways (watch out for penguins!). There's these Chimeras, which reminded a lot of some of the stuff in GURPS Bio-Tech, which cross humans with spiders and other critters (you just thought fallout was bad for your hair). There's technology, mad scientists, glowing radioctive liches running around, and toxic zombies…not to mention the vampire babies. This is a rich stew, and as much as I hate to admit it this book might even be better than David's (can I be informal here?) Reign of Steel. This is extraordinary stuff. Just let this guy write sourcebooks, then let him run wild with another worldbook.

This is a good book that takes a little bit out of many GURPS books. In fact, there's a label on the back stating that Compendium I, and Magic are required for use, while Grimoire is recommended. I never like having to refer to a bunch of other books, but the world here is so believable, so full of adventure, so compelling, that heck…I just want to go there. This book gets an "A." The whole package: writing, rules, art, is just outstanding.

Whose been doing the art direction lately? Says Alain H. Dawson in the front of the book…well, he deserves a medal. I remember when GURPS books were bought for their content. The content is still there (not quite yet in the Traveller line), but the artwork and layout now rival the power of the words. These latest books have been extraordinarily good. Thank you Steve Jackson Games!
