The Great Rail Wars is the minature skirmish rules for Deadlands. It
is a simplified version of the Deadlands combat system and I highly
reccomend it. We have used it for playing "Historical" games by
leaving out the magic rules and will add magic soon. Troops are
divideded into individual figures and posses of 5 figures. A typical
game will include about thiry figures on a side. Any old west or civil
war figures can be used as well as PEG's own excellent but limited
line of figures. The rules cover small arms, close combat including
samurai, artillery including gatling guns, various spell slingers and
mad scientists with flamethrowers and robots.
We have been particularly impressed with how quick the game is to learn even with no experience of Deadlands and how well ballanced the system is. I have introduced some die hard Warhammer 40K players to Rail Wars and they like it better. Heros can be customised and all troops improve with experience but nothing is overpowering. There are no single must have troops or abilities, nor does everyone have to take magick or gizmos to stay competitive. There are six railroads each of which have a few unique troop types plus a pool of generic troops. I am sure more troops will come out but we have been having a blast with the troops already present. I highly recomend this game. Bill Cumberland
