Capsule Review by Jason Kucherawy on 08/23/97. Genre tags: none

Blue Planet is the second product released by Biohazard Games. The game caught my eye at this year's GenCon when I strolled past the Biohazard exhibit booth. The beautiful cover art enticed my to pick it up, with its mysterious underwater scene depicting a trio of aquatic aliens swimming lazily through a submarine cavern. I spoke with Jeff (the designer) and Greg Benage (one of the writers) for about fifteen minutes before I purchased the game. They said that Blue Planet was a game for mature gamers, and contained all of the elements they loved from other games, yet the world is crafted so that all elements blend seamlessly with each other.

The game is set on the planet Poseidon, just a six month trip through a wormhole away from Earth. The planet is experiencing a type of "gold rush" as prospectors immigrate from Earth in search of "Long John" an ore which has been discovered to be the key to immortality.

The setting abounds with adventure possibilities as companies battle over discovered Long John deposits on the nearly lawless planet. The setting really does have a fantastic mix of fiction genres. Blue Planet is a mixture of cyberpunk, Waterworld, The Abyss, and westerns. There are psychotics, uplifted dolphins and orca, genetically modified humans (some with gills and webbed hands and feet), pioneers, floating towns, tropical islands, tremendous storms, political and corporate intrigue, eco-terrorism, and mystery galore.

Blue Planet is extremely well written, yet leaves many questions unanswered. The secrets of Poseidon will be revealled over time as more sourcebooks are released. The game mechanics take up only a small portion of Blue planet. The majority is packed full of setting information. This makes it a very worthwhile purchase if you wish to adapt Blue Planet to another rules system.

This game is sure to please any sci-fi gamer who seeks realism, sophistication, and some serious adventure in a setting. I beacme an instant fan before I! opened the cover of Blue PLanet, and I believe I am very picky when it comes to RPGs. My search for a superb game setting is now over. Do yourself a favour and check out Blue Planet. You will not be disappointed.

Style: 4 (Classy and well done)
Substance: 5 (Excellent!)
