The Pocket Warrior caught my eye in the local gaming store because of its unique packaging: the rulebooks fit into a CD case. Having a few extra bucks in hand at the time, I decided to pick it up. I had hoped for a simple system when I bought it, and was not disappointed. Characters have only four attributes, and skills that both make sense while being concise. Skill tests are also simple, involving a roll under the skill level on 2d10.
What's the catch? Well, there's a couple of things. First of all, the game world detailed in the little books is a somewhat lacking one. The maps of the world are blotchy and crude, and a good portion of the artwork is comewhat cartoonish-looking. All of those are rather minor gripes, however. For an easy, beginning RPG, Pocket Warrior is hard to beat. As an added bonus, the magic rules are available for download from the Plaid Rabbit website. Balancing that is the fact that the printed form of the magic rules is almost a year late in being published so far. It's entirely possible that the series has been cancelled, which would be a shame. [Editor's note-- it's in print! In fact, as of Dec 98, there are sequels in production for the series.]
