If you've ever read the comic "Groo the Wanderer," and enjoyed it, then you will love this game! The object of the game is to build a town, while avoiding rampaging armies, and the depredations of Groo.
You start by drawing five cards, then you attack whom you wish to attack, roll some dice, play the cards in your hand according to the roll of the dice, and fill your hand again. That's basically how every turn goes, but there are some interesting, and confusing, nuances to the way that the game is played. The dice are rolled, and each side contains a symbol for money, supplies, labor, or a Groo head. Each card contains these same symbols, which delineates their cost. Some of the buildings have special abilities, as do the armies and characters you're able to put down. An orphanage gives a town immunity to Groo, while Chakal helps the army avoid Groo's clumsiness. Every turn Groo moves, and players sweat if there are any Groo heads showing on the dice while Groo is in town! The game is funny, though the humour is more suited to people who have actually read the comic. I like the design of the cards and am very impressed by the game's balance...almost anyone can win in this game. One problem that the game has is that play is definitely enhanced with the addition of the Expansion set. Go ahead and splurge...the extra cards contain some of the most noted characters in the Groo mythos, and just make it a heck of a lot more fun! You might find better or more fun games...but its not likely. This game gets an "A." It is a fun and entertaining way to destroy an afternoon.
Style: 5 (Excellent!)
