Ed. note: Randy is a long-time booth worker for Chaosium for shows,
and enjoys tracking controversial industry statistics. He graciously
provided this research for publication because, well, it's just darn
interesting! Thanks to Randy for this definitive scoop!
Well friends after looking at the Andon website and checking the
exhibitors listing for GenCon here's some interesting information. As a
few days ago Andon announced that 95% of the Dealers Room has sold out,
I decided to print out the listing of this years GenCon and compared it
to the listing in the 1997 Onsite Update. Now this is a comparsion of
the number of compainies not the number of booths, that I will do after
GenCon.
Number of Companies at 1997 GenCon according to Update: 258
Number of Companies saying they are going to attend: 202
Number that are not attending GenCon 98 according Andon Website: 111
Number of New companies to coming GenCon 98: 51
We all know of the companies that publicly have said they are not going
to go but a number of others, by their absence from the 98 list appear
not to be going. There are several(one booth) non-gaming companies not
on the list like China West, Gateway Comics, and others. Here is my list
of Game Companies and big-time exhibitors not on the Andon List
Avalon Hill(!)
CompuServe
Crazy Igor
Elmore Studio
Fortess Figures
GHQ
HMGS
Imperium Games
InQuest Magazine
A bunch of Card resellers
Mindscape
Paper Mayhem
Parker Bros(I never understand why the ever came)
Pioneer Entertainment
Sierra On-line
Stellar Games
Troll Magazine
Wizards of the Coast(Gotcha)
Now with the room almost full this is all very interesting with the
number of heavy hitters not on the list. Now we are still months from
the show and several of these companies may be at the show. Time will
only tell.
Here is the full list compliled by comparing the list published on the
Andon website and the list from "Updated Exhibitor List" GenCon 97 Onsite
Update. Now there are some long, long time attendees who are on this
list, Andon says there are still some booths left. I hope you can use
this.
