Hack For More

WEEK 28: 10/19/04

The players began by deciding that the only proper way to scout out the basement area was by throwing things down into it.

A quick trip was made to the kitchen area and several jars of pickled somethingorothers were secured and lobbed down the staircases, making slight splashes at the terminus of their journey.

Thus fortified with absolutely no clear information and some lizardman grilled using the spatula of healing, the players raced down into the lower level, to find it pitchblack, knee-deep in water, and (after a light spell) infested with gecko-like lizardmen servitors who rushed into battle.

I've been learning, you see. When all these tiny, 1-HD monsters mob the party, Erich can't use his fancy little Wand of Napalm on 'em. And---to my surprise, and to a much greater extent, the PCs'--those little guys really knocked off the hitpoints. The PCs found themselves hard pressed to kill them fast enough. Erich did that falsetto "crap" again, which is good. Ever since I mentioned it here, he's become self-concious about it.

Actually, two swarms worth of the little guys was probably a bit more than the players could handle, and I deleted a regular lizardman war party from the encounters for the evening, leaving things a bit low yield in terms of EP.

The rest of the adventure was devoted mainly to the exploration of the basement level, which tightens up the shaky strands of the plot a little bit.

The players found another burst cannon; by careful deductive reasoning, they wandered in the direction it was pointed in and found an enourmous pile of rubble, indicative of a cave-in caused by, oh, I don't know, a cannonball? It seemed to be blocking off a tunnel leading deep into the earth, but there was no way for the players to be sure without masses of henchmen excavating the area. Thoughtful looks were exchanged all round.

Moving on, the players found themselves within a crudely constructed forge of orcish provenence loaded up with gadgetry embossed with Southern Orc League runes and capable of forging cannons.

Needless to say, the PCs decided that the only way to handle this was to DESTROY EVERYTHING, which they did, snapping metal fragments into Laura's character as they did so.

This minor annoyance aside, the PCs were feeling pretty good when they broke down the doors to the armory, only to find a single half-orc wearing the crest of the Southern Orc League.

A small Cube of Lodging was found on the body, along with a scroll (which the PCs couldn't read, but which obviously consisted of instructions on building cannons). Erich claimed and activated the cube, and Seth and Laura destroyed it almost entirely by accident.

It's a hell of a life, adventuring.
