Hi folks,
Okay, as I have stated in a previous thread, I am not particularly a fan of GURPS. On the other hand I do not hate it entirely either. That, however, is neither here nor there given the tenor of this review and the threads and counterthreads attached to it. This has been flamebaiting at its lowest.
This review, however, was very poorly written.. Worse yet, some of the attacks were infantile. I come to RPGnet to find out about the hobby, a hobby I have been involved in for nearly a quarter century now. When I start seeing comments like "he's a fag", "you guys suck", and other such witty repartee, I can see why the outside world views gamers often as children who have never grown up.
This makes me very sad.
Look, instead of jumping all over people for ideas we don't happen to agree with, how about some constructive criticism? "Constructive" means helping the person along, not questioning their morals, their sexual orientation, their parentage, or their bathing habits. "Constructive" means saying "The idea is a good one, but needs help with XYZ" or "While I don't like XYZ, ABC is good and should be developed more". This is the kind of criticism one usually gets with writing an article or a book; I would hope that gamers and game writers deserve the same respect.
So, leave the crass insults to your schoolyards. Pick yourselves up, dust yourselves off, and try to act like the adults we pretend to be.
