I wish you luck with your arts grant applications. Let me (us) know how it went. I got mine because of an existing publishing agreement with Jalava (a Finnish book publisher) and because my self-published roleplaying games counted as "previously published works". I received the grant for being seen as an artist and author, not as a game designer and a publisher. In retrospect, it would have been curious to try to get one for a game project, especially "Stalker".
I know you meant your elitist union of Finnish game material producers as a joke but I would be curious to know what benefits, if any, such an exclusive union of die-hard elitists (and with four members it would probably split into a LARP and tabletop factions) would bring? Other than the psychological gratification one gets from a sense of being outside (and preferably above) the masses? The driving force behind all elitism.
I am curious about this because I think such a union exists already, although only in spirit. Regardless of my disagreements with Mike and other pro-manifesto and game-theory intelligentsia, our goals remain the same (or at least come very close): more games (of any method and genre), better quality game material, deeper and more mature themes and refined (by our definitions, whatever they are) approaches to gaming, better media visibility and improved public relations for the entire hobby. And money, if we get lucky.
