Juhana asserts that literature seems to portray democracy as a breeding ground for fascism.
Juhana: IT IS. History shows us only one long-term democracy that actually is a democracy: the Swiss.
Almost all other democratic governments are actually Republics (Governing by elected representatives, who themselves form an Oligarchy, and within that oligarchy operate as a democracy.)
And republics seem to rise from attempts at democracy: to wit, the US, UK, Roman Empire, Weimar Republic, France, etc, ad nauseum.
And historically, Many have fallen to periods of Fascism or similarly autocratic governments which care little for the "common man". For key examples, the Weimar Republic, the USSR, and the current trend in the United States, plus the Roman Empire.
Government by the people for the people is not only bizzare, historically, but also prone to ineptitude... the peter principle at work. (Peter's Principle: People rise to the level of their own incompetence.)
Thank the maker that Adolf Hitler was inept at generalship, and Stalin inept at fooling the rest of the world.
