Matching the price of gold in the middle ages with a similar price today is an excercise in futility. Mass production allows swords to be sold on the Shopping network for $30.00, while modern labor standards do not permit ranchers to employ 47 cowboys for a moderate acerage. Roman soldiers used to be paid in salt; and no doubt they could obtain wives and mistresses with this 'salare'; if someone paid a modern American in a pound of salt for a month's wages, I don't think he'd be able to attract a mistress to share in his precious subtstance!
