 that pesky moral thing

Interesting article, although I disagree with the examples given of 'killing' not being evil (except for the first one).

The motivation might be understandable, in some cases killing is even necessary (i.e. during a war) but that doesn't make it any less wrong.

Is the wolf that kills the deer to survive "evil"? -
No. Partly because we hold animals to a different moral standard than humans. And also because we do the same thing - kill animals to feed us. To us this is simply the way the world works. (Unless of course you're one of those militant veggetarians or vegans or some such.)

Is the woman who shoots the scum that's trying to rape her "evil"?-
Yes. Taking 'justice' into your own hands is wrong. Or at least the first step in deconstructing society. The moment you ignore the rules of the society you are a part of you start destroying it from within. In the words of every right-wing nutcase... "It'll be anarchy!"
One could argue about this action being self-defense, though without further details I probably wouldn't agree.

Is the soldier that throws the grenade into the enemy machine gun nest so that his buddies can advance without being cut down "evil"? -
Yes. But it's necessary. Which is why nobody will hold this soldier accountable for his actions. (Although his own conscience should once all that crap is over.)

What about the "heroic" soldiers that buried alive thousands of Iraqi infantry by bulldozing their trenches during Desert Storm, were they "evil"?
- See above.

What about the Special Forces sniper that will someday put a bullet in the head Osama Bin Laden from a mile away, he is committing a premeditated murderous act fuelled by the need for vengeance, is he "evil"?
- Oh hell yes! But for some reason people think that vengeance can override morals, so I guess nobody will mind.
("See kids, this is what we call a cynic - indistinguishable from a disillusioned idealist.")

Though if this assassinaton was the only way to stop Osama, I guess it would fall under an act of war (see above).

P.S. - No I'm not holier-than-thou. Unless of course you think you're less-holy-than-me, which is your call and none of my business.
