Let's see, before L5R (1997), Daedalus released Feng Shui in 1996. If that isn't unadulterated fightery goodness, I don't know what is. What game before that can we bring up? (7th Sea was released in *1999* for heaven's sake. I can't see how it's relevant to a "fighters' rebirth")
I think the column set up a straw man, cut it down, and then jumped up and down on the pieces. I mean, if fighters weren't cool in the 90s, what of all those anecdotes of people playing twinked vampires/werewolves in WW's games?

P.S. Second oldest profession? What about, hm, farmer? Herdsman? The truth is, you can't afford to have professional fighters until you are producing enough food to support someone who doesn't help with that...
