In D&D, for example, the most combat effective weapon combination is the long sword (bastard sword if you can spare the feat) and large shield. Period.

Actually, the battle axe and war hammer are marginally better weapons in 3rd Ed., doing ~0.2 points more damage/round on average. The advantage decreases as your level goes up, but I don't believe it ever goes away totally.
<p>The reason for this is because, though their base damage is the same, they critical differently. The long swords greater threat range results in less average damage because you have to roll again to confirm the extra damage. More randomness, less damage.
