In my experience the people who get accused of being metagamers, essentially over competative players, are not trying to be problem players. They just have a mode for enjoyment, which can't seem to shake their bad habits. Given some time and work it is possible to develop better gaming habits, which usually allow you more enjoyment in the game. A good GM and player group can seriously help.
It seems there are two ways to reduce metagaming, the stick or the carrot. I prefer the carrot. I simply set up the setting, so that relying on out of game information is unreliable, and that a well played more enjoyable character tends to go further. Over-competition, with all of it's min-maxing, both in terms of game mechanics and information, puts a character at risk. After all power is it's own drawback, and a little knowledge is truly dangerous. It's hard to do, and keeping everyone pleased with trouble players around can be a trial, but if you are careful, you might be able to seriously make a difference in someone else's enjoyment of the hobby.
