In my experience, it's a lot more common for women to play male characters than vice-versa. This is partly because in many historical and fantasy settings, women would be heavily discriminated against (a point that is often glossed over for the benefit of any female PCs) and partly because men playing women are much more likely to face discrimination in our own society than women playing men (it's still much more acceptable for women and girls to behave in traditionally "masculine" ways than for men and boys to be feminine or "girly").
Choosing to play a male character can also be a good shield for a woman playing with a group she isn't entirely comfortable with. Might the GM introduce sleazy NPCs or scenarios that may involve assault? While some players may be happy with that, for those who aren't, male characters are usually safer. Might one of the other players be a socially awkward type who treats men as people, but women as something else (e.g. something to be protected, but not taken seriously; a sex object or an automatic care-giver)? Hopefully not, but if they are, playing a male character might ease this.
