In the gaming groups I've played with (at least in recent years), cross-gender characters are fairly common. I personally tend to balance out between the two. And right now I'm playing a female character who is romantically involved with a male character being played by a woman (not my girlfriend, this is over IRC).
Is this really so uncommon? I'm surprised to hear that anyone would make a big fuss about it -- at least outside of high school. :P
