I think your point is very intersting : loners can be played seriously.
I am used to thinking the loner is an unfortunate stereotype of boring PC : a mysterious hero with the wind in his hair played by an unsociable player. How unconstructive.
Indeed if a player asks oneself the right questions (such as "how will I play with this group?"), this can be a fair role like any other.
I think it is often more relevant to build a group of roles (with premeditated social interaction), rather than building a group of players with fancy characters.
