A minor nitpick in an otherwise very good article:

I wouldn't say it's THAT recent a phenominon. Odysseus would be the classic example of a reluctant hero- all the guy really wants to do is stay home, after all. I think the Bible has a couple reluctant heroes as well. And later on, we have Hamlet.
Also, we have Holger Carlson (published prior to Lord of the Rings), Elric, Shane (in fact, the reluctant hero is a cornerstone of western literature), and Lemual Gulliver, as reluctant heroes. So reluctant heroes are probably as as any other literary archetype.
