Criminal
Whether driven by the thrill of living outside the law or by sheer necessity, the criminal defines his slide into evil by actions, not words. Politics, psychology, and other factors pale because the Pay-Off is living the life of crime. Cinema is rich with criminal archetypes. A criminal may be a solo operator or a gang member, he or she lives in and out of the Corrections Industrial Complex, and has resources and skills to back up their lifestyle. Most criminals lack a formal education, but make up for it in terms of resources and networks/gangs. The biggest down-side to the life of crime is not necessarily the law, but other criminals ("A Better Tomorrow"), who may alternately regard each other as associates or victims-in-making ("there is no honor among thieves" versus "thick as thieves"). Some criminals come from a long line of criminals ("The Godfather") and have access to extraordinary lifestyles ("Scarface"), but most are living on the margin, some wishing for a better life ("Oliver Twist"), forming associations of convenience ("Young Guns") or affinity ("The Warriors"), while others can imagine nothing else, except maybe dreaming someday of making the Big Score ("Oceans 11").
