Good article.
I've tried to come up with a definition of a fanatic. People toss these words like "extremist" or "fanatic" around a little too loosely. Sometimes, it seems like they mean "not what most people think".
But sometimes common sense is wrong, even evil.
So, a "fanatic" is someone who pursues a good, usually of a more extended or non-basic nature, and is prepared to sacrifice the basic moral teachings of their code to get there.
The Inquisition ignored a fundamental of the Christian faith. Choice. Freedom. If God gave us freedom to choose Heaven or Hell, then who am I to take that away from someone at the point of a sword?
Every would-be fanatic should meditate on "It's never right to do wrong, to get a chance to do right."
I also think that the drama of "hard choices" might appeal to many fanatics.
