 Rat Bastards and Monsters...

...are two of my favorite types of characters to play. Sort of.

Rat Bastards don't *have* to have a warped, assymetrical sense of honor to be rat bastards. Which is more annoying -- someone who you know would leave you behind to save his own tail whining because you didn't rescue him, or someone who you know would leave you behind to save his own snickering at you behind your back because you *did* rescue him?

I suppose someone who did *both* would be worst. }:) But you can have a consistent philosophy that makes you a rat bastard.

As for monsters, they're as much of a role playing exercise as a paladin. Sure, like with paladins, the stupid version is, well, stupid, but if your monster is smart and socialized enough not to kill people without justification (or at least, without legal authority) then it's just another motivation for whatever it is that your party does, like searching for treasure or power or wanting to do good deeds.

Heck, for that matter you could be a monster *and* a strict servant of justice. They're not incompatible.
