Nice idea - I like.
It reminds me a bit of the Alvin Maker universe - probably whatever engine is used to model European superstition could be used for that too.
On the subject of American superstitian, a great resource for them is John George Hohman's Pow-Wows - a collection of charms, prayers and similar from the 19th century US. An online copy is available at
