All in all, I do not like the mixing of player qualities with character perceptions (and visa-versa).
What makes a good party leader has *nothing* to do with the player beyond that player's ability to roleplay a character who can lead. If you want to talk about leading a group of players, fine, but this is completely independent from playing a character leading a group of characters.
Sure, if you play with people who cannot separate character and player knowledge/perception/personality, the article makes sense, but then I desperately try not to play with these people.
For example, take the phrase "Role-playing worlds are dangerous places, and players will gravitate to someone who seems rock-solid and in control." Uh, no. I, as a player, will roleplay my character gravitating toward the character who seems most appropriate as a leader. Or if I don't, I have to work on my roleplaying skills.
