In order to avoid getting into the argument about whether you should lead the players or the characters, here's a new line of thought on how to use this column:
What if the player isn't as good of a leader as his character, but sincerely wants to learn how to realize that potential in game? In that case, much of the advice in these columns could be very useful to help that player play the character more effectively. A sort of informal, vicarious "officer's training." ;-) And if the player can get a handle on those new skills in game, then they might even transfer to real life as well.
