I generally like the idea, but how about this:
Suffering a serious wound means you loose one serious wound level - but there is no ill effect untill you have lost all your deadly wound levels.
Same for minor wounds.

That way, you cannot die without having suffered the 'appropiate' amount of deadly wounds. But you do not ignore all minor damage, you just fight bravely on.
