Interesting and well put column this is. A few years ago I began to think about all the little soldiers in my computer war games. How come there was no real reward for keeping soliders alive? In the age of the RTS its "Oops lost a guy well I will build another." This is extremely unrealistic but I suppose most game players (wargmaers especially) do not want to be burdened with realism ( a whole other subject.)
Most RPG battles tend to be battles of attrition in which one side is damaged to one degree and the other is annihilated. In a game I played last year the PC's did not know what to do when PC's died. There was never any real talk of will san dnever any real talk of proper burials. So one of my characters was exploded by a Wizard casting a fireball (High Cost Cremation though maybe we should consider it for poor Ted Williams.) MAny RPG's and campaigns tend to be meat grinders and perhaps it would be unrealistic to expect otherwise. I think players of the "I Lost" model don't get very attached to their characters mainly because "Oops lost a guy well I will build another." RPG as RTS....
Wel thanks again for the good column
