Another way to make the map more accessible and less distancing is to relate it to the type of game you run.
For instance, I wouldn't use a grid for a Fantasy game. Just a green mat and a tape measure. Realistic as possible features (trees from model train sets etc).
For an X-Wing assault on the Death Star, a grid mat would feel right. You can use counters with simple designs that you feel would be the suitable object representations for Leia watching the battle on her computer screen.
Modern games would work nicely with blueprint-like building maps and aerial photos if you can find some suitable for your needs. Perhaps modern hazard symbols to represent your danger zones eg lightning strike in a red triangle for electrical danger.
