One of the more fun Star Wars (old D6 system, way before Phantom Menace that made me not want to play Star Wars anymore) I ran had the players and some 2D Imperial characters captured by aliens and made to play "hussade" to determine who the aliens would ally with.
Hussade in this campaign was vaguely based on Jack Vance's sport; the players played on high grid of girders over a tank of water with lacrosse like sticks. The goal was to get the ball into a small net.
The rules all stemmed right from the D6 combat rules; initiative, moving, and various actions. I think modern D20 could handle the game quite well.
The players could move, they could make jumping rolls to leap across a grid (rather than running along the girder), they could ram someone which might knock them back.
If you had the ball you could pass it to another, who then had to make a roll to catch it (or it would continue, possibly going out of bounds or into the water, allowing the other team to start with the ball from preset positions). Players near the trajectory of the ball could try to intercept, this was a harder roll.
You could run with the ball, however enemy players are allowed to strike you with their sticks; this has the tendency of sending you into the water if they connect. You are forbidden to hit those who don't have the ball; however the Imperials did do this...
You could also shoot the ball into the net, which became extremely difficult at longer ranges.
Those in the water could climb out (usually took two turns),and unless they had the ball, the action continued without them.
The players, being naturally more athletic than the Imperials, won, despite various dirty tricks and fouls, and despite the 'aid' of the Rebel player Failed Jedi who comically attempted to use the force to cheat and TK the ball around.
Alas, there was no shirl.
Obviously, a good Hussade player would have a good offense and defense power, be strong, be able to jump well, and have good ballhandling skills. Except for the ballhandling skills, many adventurers would fit these categories!
