I remember reading a Sci-Fi story years ago about a master ad-man who got frozen and revived several centuries later. He found out that the population had gradually built up resistance to all the door-to-door techniques that he was familiar with, to the point that they were abandoned for straight-up hypnotism! He could use an ancient technique and make a sale with any (old) technique one day becuase it was unfamiliar, but by the next day it would not work (the ingrained resistances kicked in). He finally gave up and started to learn hypnosis.
