A very good article, but the author shold stress that while some of the better mercenary outfits can have high morale and training, you gotta remember: they FIGHT for pay, but will not DIE for it. Obvious examples are elf or dwarf mercenaries in human pay fighting orcs, or the Irish fighting for France against the English (remember the Wild Geese of Bourbon France?). To employ a quaote from George R.R. Martin's A Clach of Kings, "they'll kill for those knighthoods, but they're not going to die for them." When the going gets tough(i.e., when taking serious losses), most mercenary units, unless fighting a hated foe, will disengage.
