I think calling Hero Games "dead" is a little premature. True, it's been in various comatose states in the last couple of years, but there have been signs of life.
They've very recently been bought by a corporation of fans called "DOJ, Inc." Check the news archive of rpg.net. One of the partners in DOJ is none other than Steve Long, author of more Champions supplements than you can shake a stick at. :) They have scheduled a release date for Hero System 5th edition in April and have stated that they *do* have enough money to print it *and* support it.
Most Hero fans (such as myself) consider this a Good Thing. We haven't been this excited since, well, the last time they were bought out. :)
