One of the most effective props I've seen/used is Monopoly money or coins for cash. It's one less bookkeeping hassle to keep track of gold pieces or cash, because, well, you either *have* the money or you *don't*.
One character had a lucky coin, and I gave him a coin as prop. It was magic - heads gave him +1 to rolls, tails gave him a -1. I kept track of him as he flipped the coin. Pretty fun.
Another prop idea I've used is video - a few of us dress up, film ourselves, and then play the video for the players. It's great when the players/characters watch the 10:00 news and they're picture shows up. I've also wanted to use Flash or some 3D applications to work out some neat video.
A question - a lot of props are "persistent" - players have to consistantly refer to them. Some can get bulky, and others are easy to misplace. How does everyone keep track of the props - do you let the players hold onto them, or do you have a gaming box you just throw everything into?
