I am interested in learning of some of the lesser known horror games out there, and sharing information about them.
I have already mentioned SLA Industries (now published by Hogshead), what appears to be an action game with death imagery at first, but turns into a horror game as characters realize that they are the villains.
Kult (was from Target Games, seems to be in limbo right now) is kind of like Hellraiser magnified. It, too, has a tactical system which can detract from the horror, but its approach to morality has an interesting twist. Excessive good or evil turns you into something else, and away from your humanity.
Puppetlands (Hogshead publishing again. Do I love this company or what?) Has a narrative rules system (see the essay on the Adept Press webpage about tactical, simulationist and narrative rules systems), which helps immensely with the fairy tale style of this game.
Bearers of Jade (expansion book for Legend of the Five Rings, from Alderac Entertainment Group, a subsidiary of WotC, a subsidiary of Hasbro). While L5R isn't horror, the writers of Bearers of Jade do an excellent job of instructing how to run it as such, and keep it from turning into an action game.
That's what I've heard of. What do you know of?
Yours truly,
Graham MacLean
